German Language Teaching: General Information

The Department of German Language Teaching offers an undergraduate program that requires students to take 240 credits and 60 courses in 8 semesters in order to become German teachers for primary and secondary schools where German is taught as a 1st or 2nd foreign language. The undergraduate program consists of theoretical and practical courses related to field knowledge, general culture and pedagogical formation. Theoretical courses take place in technology-supported classrooms, workshops and laboratories, while practical courses take place in practice schools in cooperation with the Atatürk Faculty of Education and the Istanbul Directorate of National Education under the supervision of lecturers and teachers. The aim is to provide teacher candidates with adequate teaching skills in the classroom.

As part of the registration process students are asked to take part in a language exam. According to the results of this exam, students whose German language level is not sufficient enough to follow the lessons, have to attend a preparatory class for one year. Students who successfully pass the language exam are admitted directly to the first year. In the first and second years of our undergraduate program, the development of German writing, reading and speaking skills continues. Common courses, which are compulsory for all students of Atatürk Faculty of Education, are taught by lecturers from other departments, these courses are conducted in Turkish.
